Clinical Nuggets Tuesday, January 01, 2008 The field of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery has benefited greatly from basic research, clinical research, and translational research. The ideal is to perform laboratory research with objectives and results that can, when applied to humans, result in improved methods of diagnosis and treatment. In spite of what the lay media often illustrates, what we do not know about causes and treatment of disease is vast compared to what little we do know. Therefore, research in our field requires continuation and emphasis.In recent years, the call for evidence-based research has appropriately been promoted and emphasized at our national and international meetings. This forward-looking approach to research has prospects for a good future and should be a priority for our profession. It is no surprise that the health insurance companies, second- and third-party payers, also promote this movement—too often with cost-containment as a primary objective rather than what is best for .../continued/
